Cheveley · Newmarket · Established 1974
Ten stallions.
One hundred and forty mares.
Fifty-two seasons.
Fenmarsh is a family stud on the Cheveley side of Newmarket. We stand ten stallions from £3,500 to £35,000, board mares for owners in eleven countries, and foal down every one of them ourselves.
The roster
Standing for 2027
Five of the ten below. Fees are quoted October 1st, Special Live Foal, and every nomination is agreed directly with Harriet Vaux — there is no portal and no agent in between.
The horse the rest of the roster is measured against. Nine crops on the ground, a Group 1 winner in seven of them, and the only stallion here whose fee has never come down.
Retired sound at four having won at the top level at two, three and four. The fastest horse this stud has stood, and priced to fill.
Unbeaten in three starts over ten furlongs at three, including the Brancaster. His first foals were the best-received of their crop at Newmarket in October.
A small, hard, fast horse who gets small, hard, fast horses. If you want a two-year-old ready in April rather than August, this is the one.
The most reliable value on the roster. Gets a precocious, sound two-year-old that trains on, and his fillies have made up into good broodmares.
What we actually do
A stud is a place where somebody is awake at four in the morning.
Fenmarsh boards around one hundred and forty mares a season across two hundred and eighty acres of Suffolk chalk. We foal them down in our own barn, with our own staff, and we do not sub-contract the nights.
Owners get a photograph of their foal within the hour, a weekly written report through the season, and a named person to ring. That is the whole model.

People who send us mares
We sent two mares in 2019 to try them out. We have eleven there now. Declan rings me himself when something is wrong, which is the whole point.
The weekly reports are the thing nobody else does properly. Photographs, weights, what the vet said. I have never once had to chase them for news.
Harriet told me not to send my mare to Flintgate. She was right, and she cost herself a covering fee saying so. That is why I keep going back.
The ground
Two hundred and eighty acres of chalk, and that is not a marketing line.
The soil here drains within the hour. It is why Newmarket is where it is, and it is why our foals go out in February when studs twenty miles west are still stood in.
Nine paddocks, none bigger than eleven acres, all with post-and-rail rather than wire. The hedges were laid by hand in 1974 and they are still the same hedges.
